Bovikalc®

Bovikalc® for the prevention and (after) treatment of milk fever.

Bovikalc contains 42 grams of calcium per bolus, which consists of quickly available calcium and gradually available calcium. This means that Bovikalc not only provides calcium in the short term, but also contributes to the prevention of milk fever through its long-term release. The calcium in the bolus is bound to anionic salts. These salts are also released when calcium is released in the rumen. This stimulates the cow’s own calcium metabolism, causing extra calcium to enter the bloodstream from the bone. The bolus has a protective coating and is therefore easy and safe to administer using a bolus shooter.

Bovikalc can also be used preventively in dairy cows at risk of milk fever and animals with subclinical milk fever. Risk factors for milk fever include a high condition score in the dry period, previous history of milk fever and the age of the cow. A recent study shows that lame cows and cows with a high milk production in the previous lactation also benefit from administering Bovikalc around calving3. These treated animals had higher production and fewer health problems compared to animals that had not received a bolus.

In addition to the preventive use of Bovikalc, the bolus can of course also be used for the follow-up treatment of milk fever in cows that have had a calcium infusion.
